I Not So Secretly Hate, Secret Santa.

CUBED Christmas

CUBED Christmas KK

By Martin Fleming.

I despise workplace Secret Santa.

Now, before you dismiss me as just another hipster sitting in a Brunswick café, wearing flannel, sipping lattes and bashing the holiday for its over-consumerism, you should know I actually love Christmas.

What’s more, I love a Cliché Christmas – the colourful tinsel, the demonic-sounding carols, the slave driver Santa and his poorly unionised elves, and even the crackers with Dad jokes. Bring it on; I will happily gorge on the trough that is Christmas overkill until Santa returns to the north pole and puts down three of his reindeer to keep the rest on their toes*.

But Secret Santa is a different story. Secret Santa is usually an awkward work-place event that involves me going out and finding a gift that’s well under budget, but not so tacky as to actually be called cheap. Then there’s the hope that I can get an equal return on investment with whatever gift I get from someone – maybe even come out on top!

It’s not fun; it’s cringe-worthy. The spotlighted employee feigns happiness as they mentally think of ways to ‘accidentally’ break the gift and the rest of the staff look to the heavens and thank their respective gods that it wasn’t them who received that “Porcelain Rabbit Playing the Piano” statuette.

All that being said, this year was different.

Our Secret Santa was a pleasant change. I was amazed at the thought that went into the gifts this year. Being a tight-knit group, it should probably come as no surprise, but it was still refreshing to see everyone open their gifts and say, “Aww, this is great!” without that usual twang of sarcasm.

There’s no moral here, though with a gun to my head I might say it has something to do with being nice. However, this was merely an observation of how something simple can reveal so much. And what this showed was a group that generally like each other enough not to care that they might not get as good a gift back. They just enjoyed the gift of giving.

*Annual North Pole tradition. Google it.

A Big Boost for FedUni

This Open Day, Federation University Australia and Publicis CUBED’s challenge was to increase attendance across both the Ballarat and Gippsland campuses.

To build greater awareness of FedUni and drive traffic to Open Day 2015, we delivered a range of event-specific communications and launched a multi-media campaign called the “Federation Generation” that coincided with the event. The aim was to alter the national mindset that metro-based universities are a better choice than their regional counterparts by championing the school’s unique regional spirit, breadth of exciting courses and top-quality teaching.

A day in the life of a suit on shoot

It’s 5:00am – the alarm sounds to remove you from the all-too-brief slumber of the night before and remind you that it’s shoot day. You rummage blindly in the dark, fumbling through a plethora of printouts to gather your essentials. Call sheets, talent lists, scripts and your trusty notebook in hand, you brave the morning chill to make it to the car and it’s off to work.

Saffron Gate: A true recount of corruption, thievery and backstabbing at the CUBED Christmas Party.

By Martin Fleming Anonymous.

Dateline, December 5th 2013, a day that will live in infamy – the CUBED Christmas Party.

The CUBED troops assembled at a secret location for the Christmas party. We had not been told the details of the event, merely that our attendance was required and we had to wear closed shoes. We arrived at the location in blindfolds, at gunpoint, and were told we would be competing in a Hunger Games style kitchen challenge – hence known as the Hungry Games – whereby we would be divided and required to cook Spanish style food to stay alive.
