The 2012 CUBED Skiing Extravaganza

On the weekend of 4-6th of August, nine adventurous CUBEDites (plus a couple of unsuspecting ring-ins) took off for a weekend of extreme skiing at Mt Buller.
It was 5.30 by time all our work commitments were complete, cars and alcohol packed so we flew out of the car park turned right on to Montague St, and then came to a complete stop. It was peak hour and the traffic wasn’t going anywhere. So we enjoyed the radio and some swearing at the Melbourne traffic.

60 frustrating minutes later we were on the Hume Freeway and flying along.

A couple of pit stops later (Yea take-away for a heart-attack special hamburger and a couple of kebabs plus a toilet break at the pub) and we had arrived in Mansfield. It is here that we encountered our first hiccup. Being from the big city, we are able to shop for groceries at any time of the day thanks to 24 hour shopping. I don’t know about you, but I have woken at 3.30am and often headed to Coles to pick-up a couple of steaks and some toothpaste. But apparently that is not the case in rural Victoria. We had planned to purchase some groceries on the way, however everything shut at 8.00pm – and we arrived about 9. So we got alcohol instead. Oh, and some skis and chains, but not really as important.

Eventually we arrived at the car park at the top of Buller a fair bit poorer due to the entrance and taxi fees (approximately equal to the GDP of a small Pacific nation), so we loaded a gear on a Mt Buller Land Cruiser and chugged up the hill were we arrived at our apartment.

We woke the next day to a fairly foggy morning, but to our great delight, it was snowing! Hooray. We hit the slopes. On our first run, our intrepid GM, Anthony, felt the need to have a little lie down. By lie down I mean crash. And by little I mean big. However the good news was the aftermath was caught on film for posterity sake and mirth by other CUBEDites.

The rest of us had a great day exploring the various runs and the weather cleared up by the afternoon with patches of sunlight revealing the majesty of the Australian Alps (sorry, taking a little licence here).

Finally we headed back to the apartment and enjoyed what I have termed “Nachos el Supremo”, prepared by Rachel, our motherly production manager and camp coordinator. Of course this was washed down with a well-earned cold drink.

A few of the group then headed out to enjoy the entertainment on the mountain, while the more subdued stayed in to watch the Pies smash the Saints by 6 points thanks to a somewhat controversial decision by the umpire (the author being a Pies supported felt that it was not controversial at all). There were also some Olympics on, however interest was low due to Australia’s usually pathetic performance.

Sunday saw the weather deteriorate further so rather than hitting the slopes again, we all headed out for a large breakfast and steaming coffee. After which we all packed up and headed home. Jono and Kate put on a brave face as the car headed down the mountain around the long windy bends, reminding them ever so gently that they had a large greasy breakfast after one to many the night before.

A Big Boost for FedUni

This Open Day, Federation University Australia and Publicis CUBED’s challenge was to increase attendance across both the Ballarat and Gippsland campuses.

To build greater awareness of FedUni and drive traffic to Open Day 2015, we delivered a range of event-specific communications and launched a multi-media campaign called the “Federation Generation” that coincided with the event. The aim was to alter the national mindset that metro-based universities are a better choice than their regional counterparts by championing the school’s unique regional spirit, breadth of exciting courses and top-quality teaching.
